Lithium Battery Technology and Fires Involving These Batteries
Instructors – Ron Butler
 A look into lithium battery technology, differences between the certain models of those
types of batteries, and safe fire investigation practices when encountering lithium battery
fires.

Instructor Bio
Joe Herzberg – Mr. Herzberg started out his career as firefighter within Bordentown Township Fire District #2 in 1989. During his twenty-four-year career, he
held many titles, including Fire Lieutenant, Fire Marshall, and Fire Captain/Senior Fire Officer within his district, overseeing three shifts that operated a squad and
ladder company, ultimately retiring in 2012 due to an injury sustained during a structure fire. Since 2014, he has worked within the private sector as a fire
investigator in New Jersey, currently working for Atlantic Professional Services, where he specializes in transportation related fires, dealing with everything from
passenger vehicles to heavy trucks and construction equipment. To date, he has investigated over 800 vehicles. Along with fire investigations, Joe also teaches for
the New Jersey Chapter of the IAAI and the New Jersey State Department of Criminal Justice, along with the IAAI, where he is a current Director for the IAAI Board,
as well as the Co-Chair of the site Selection committee.

Instructor Bio
Ron Butler – Ronald Butler holds a Master’s Degree in Instructional Systems Design from Wayne State University with an emphasis in Human and Organizational
Performance Improvement. Ron spent 23 years with the Detroit Fire Department developing expertise in hazardous materials (response and operations), evacuation
planning (NFPA), radiological awareness, response and operations, rapid intervention, confined space (operations), marine firefighting (response and operations), LithiumIon Battery Fire Response Training for Aircraft Rescue Fire Fighting (ARFF), process design (battery fire response SOP’s), and many more. Ron is deeply involved in the
battery safety sector as he co-chairs SAE’s Battery Transportation Committee and chairs the Michigan Aerospace Manufacturers Association’s Battery Logistics
Development Group. He is a member of UL’s Battery Safety Committee and an original member of the ANSI/CAN/UL 5800:2020 Standard for Safety Battery Fire
Containment Products. He is a primary subject-matter expert with the NFPA for the development of their EV/Gaseous Fuels Firefighter Response Training and Battery
Energy Storage and Photovoltaic Emergency Response Training for the Fire Service. He is the CEO of Energy Storage Safety Products International which has been
awarded multiple government grants to develop specialized battery transport and storage systems and Managing Partner with e-cell secure, LLC which works with
industry to develop next-generation battery logistics tools and technologies for safe battery transport and storage.
